Jobs Social Media Managers Actually Do

When I mention my job as social media manager for our family business, people think that it is just an honorary post without much work involved. Just last week, one of my distant relatives on my mother’s side was asking about my work and I could see that she didn’t really believe that I did any work at all other than attending the parties like the one we were in at that time. Social media is a rapidly growing industry now. With almost all the major social media platforms doing wonderful things to business online and offline, the role of social media manager has certainly become a crucial one. A business associate I met at an event was complaining that he couldn’t get hold of a skilled social media manager.

The applicants he had interviewed for the job were focused on driving engagement only. While this is what is important for a business, he said it alone couldn’t constitute running a business successfully. It is true. One reason for this state of affairs is that there has not been much growth on what a social media manager accomplishes in the present day scenario, which is driven by goal, oriented marketing metrics. This is because companies do not have a clear insight of measuring their ROI.

As a result, they flounder when they hire an individual to help them get the results they want. This vicious cycle, which ignores the real impact social media can do to the bottom line profits, has resulted in businesses hiring the wrong persons for managing their social media presence.

Ways to Boost Your Creativity

Ways to Boost Your Creativity

Creativity is something that is part of our makeup. It is an inherent mind function, which controls our existence. Just imagine, without creativity man would never have come this far. Without imagination, he would not have created the wheel, which is an important milestone in the advancement of humanity or all other things that have brought us to the present state we are in.  Therefore, being creative helps you give an outward expression to an inward emotion or thought.

While this may seem a simple explanation, it indicates the presence of two hurdles, which obstruct our creativity. One is an internal obstruction that restricts your inspiration and imagination, and the other is an external force, which restricts your presentation and expression. If you find your creativity suffering of late, here are some ways to make your creative juices flow in abundance.

Identify your source

Finding your muse or source of inspiration is the way to boost your creativity. While this looks like a simple thing that everyone is aware of, most often I come across people who do not know exactly what or who inspires him or her. You can find your muse in music, in people, nature, from a memory or a specific situation. Regardless of where you find it, when you do, you won’t have to look for moments of inspiration to strike you. You can activate creativity in you, whenever you feel you are in need of it.

Skills to Stimulate Better Discussions

Leadership studies reveal qualities including adaptability, intelligence, assertiveness and conscientiousness are vital for inspiring and motivating employees.  Leaders who are inspiring and hold a positive approach pave the way for developing and empowering followers. Team members value such leaders and the performance is better.

A team leader should be passionate, energetic, enthusiastic and genuine. He or she should help the team achieve its objectives and most importantly help each individual member reach his or her full capability.

Whether you are a leader of a small group or a larger one, a key quality you have to be skilled at is to know the art of initiating better discussions. One significant way to achieve this is reduce the pressure on the group leader. Instead of setting high targets for leaders, the focus should be on better coaching and ways that automatically lead. Here are some ways, which I have used and found quite effective.

Look at the bigger picture

While it is important for the task at hand to be given due attention, you also need to look at the bigger picture. Envision where you need your team members to be. Paying attention to the needs of the individual members will help you lead them better. Although this is a bit difficult to achieve in a new or large group, it becomes easier when the team has been together for longer periods.  One way to accelerate this process is assessing the health of the member and developing a health plan.  Customize the assessment process, so it fits the specific needs of the group.

My tips on Effective Project Management: BlackOakLED.com case study

Project Management is an aspect that marketing experts shy away from. Marketers usually work alone or in small and collaborative teams only. Their attitude towards project management is that it is apt for product assemble or software development or a tool that meets the web development requirements.  But this is not true.

Organizations would gain monumental advantages, if the marketing team were to think as conventional project managers. Metrics would definitely soar. And timelines would shrink. The advantages would increase as teams come up with better and innovative marketing strategies and campaigns. An overall improvement in efficiency is guaranteed, if this change in the attitude of marketing managers were to take place. Here are some effective project management tips that companies would benefit greatly from:

  • Crucial elements
  • For an efficient project management, I consider the following elements as vital:
  • Project planning
  • Task and document management
  • Document organization and storage
  • Cost tracking
  • ROI analysis

Task management both at collective and independent levels

Innovative project management enables reduction in overheads and empowers businesses to manage their resources effectively. Tracking capacity in real time helps achieve better results. I recommend using Slack or Basecamp collaboration platforms or if the company requires a more comprehensive suite, the AtTask or In Loox.  Recently I had applied my project management tips on the side job for blackoakled.com. The workflow, important task management and employee productivity was immensely improved at that company as a result.

The use of such suites and platforms is that clients are able to view clearly the progress of the work at crucial points of its development path right from inside the system that marketing participants employ.

Issues such as correlating emails or lack of proper information on vital matters are eliminated. I prefer cloud based programs for project management, especially those that integrate with existing resources like Microsoft Outlook, so participants are informed of milestones and enable them to see the project in a comprehensive way. It is also possible for members to be updated   through mobile devices too.

Optimized workflow

With a proper project management, it is possible to boost the communication and organization skills that marketing departments lack sorely.  Working and cooperating, as a team is not something that marketing professionals are good at. With a solid project management, you can bring in freelance contracting assistance to achieve objectives.

Working as a team

Many a time projects require skills, which the contributors of a project don’t possess. Training in project management also helps in such situations. You will be able to decide on the required competencies, analyze the workers available and recommend outsourcing or even hiring of additional staff to meet the demanding workload.

Accountability is one area, which directly relates to how successful a project is. When every member of a team take full responsibility of his or her position and its demands, heightened productivity is assured. Conversely, if accountability is absent, it can make the project halt midway. Avoiding blame or finger pointing is unproductive and unprofessional. When you learn the skill of directing teams towards achieving a common objective, you can definitely see the results faster and much better than you had originally expected.
